UNITED WAY NWLA TO DISTRIBUTE THOUSANDS OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES IN RED RIVER PARISH

July 29, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

WHO:

  • Coushatta Mayor Johnny Cox and city staff.
  • Red River Parish Public Schools Superintendent Alison Hughes and district teachers.
  • United Way of Northwest Louisiana staff and CEO Bruce Willson.
  • Hundreds of Red River Parish families

WHAT:

United Way’s 3RD Annual Red River Parish Public Schools Back to School Bash will distribute hundreds of backpacks and more than a thousand sets of schools supplies; enough for the nearly 1,900 enrolled students. This event will also serve as a resource fair for families to access available services and programs. About a dozen community resource vendors will be available, including Lifeshare Blood Center. Blood donors will receive early access into the bash. Food and family-friendly games are provided.

WHEN:

Monday, July 29, 2019 from 5:00 – 7 p.m.

WHERE:

Red River Parish Schools, 915 E. Carroll St., Coushatta, LA

WHY:

United Way of Northwest Louisiana will help hundreds of families in Red River Parish by offering free backpacks and thousands of school supplies. The United Way ALICE study of financial hardship says 25 percent of Red River Parish residents are identified as ALICE – households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living. Twenty-four percent live below the ALICE threshold in poverty.

New school supplies are a luxury for many Red River Parish families. It is the goal of United Way to help these students become prepared for school so they can focus on learning once inside the classroom.
