(Shreveport, LA) – Brookshire Grocery Company (Brookshire’s) awarded $12,500 to United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA) to support the organization’s ongoing campaign and provide disaster assistance to families affected by Hurricane Laura.
“Brookshire’s has been a strong corporate partner with United Way for years.” says Dr. Bruce Willson, Jr, President and CEO of UWNWLA. “We are very grateful to them for their continued support, especially for the ALICE families struggling with food insecurities and those in need of disaster relief assistance.”
The grant from Brookshire’s designated $10,000 to UWNWLA’s general campaign, and the grocery company also donated 50 Brookshire’s gift cards, valued at $25 each, to help families currently battling effects from both COVID-19 and the recent hurricanes. To apply for assistance, individuals can go to www.unitedwaynwla.org/assistance-application. Individuals or families who were employed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and are now experiencing income loss as a direct result of the pandemic and/or were affected by Hurricane Laura are eligible for assistance.
Nearly half of all residents in Northwest Louisiana’s 10-parish region are identified as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) or below. These individuals are employed and working hard, but still struggle to stay afloat.
“ALICE is often the hardest hit by a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. Adding another disaster like a hurricane can be crippling. Providing grocery assistance to a family already teetering on the edge of a financial cliff could be the lifeline they need to prevent falling off,” say LaToria W. Thomas, Vice President of Resource Development.
